Our Election

The 2012 USA Presidential election is over — and like him or not, President Obama has been re-elected. What should our response be? Peter says (l Peter 2:17), "Honor all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king." ("King" comes from a Greek word that means foundation of power). Peter, who addresses his readers as the "Elect" (1:2), says we are to "honor the king/president". That doesn’t mean we can’t respectfully disagree on certain issues!  As important as electing a President is - we each have a more important "election" of our own. Peter also said, (ll Peter 1:10),"...give diligence to make your calling and election sure". He goes on in the next verse to say, "For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ". Now that's an "election" we should be excited about! In Acts 9:15, the ascended Jesus tells Ananias that Saul (i.e. Paul)"is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel" ("chosen" from the same Greek word as "election" in l Peter).  In order to be like the Apostle Paul, let us make our election sure (i.e. make sure we have elected Gods only begotten Son as our Savior!). Rather than slinging mud at others (including the President), let’s bear the name of Jesus before all —including the President! Paul certainly had his share of disagreements with the kings of his day - but it didn’t stop him from being a witness to both "small and great" (Acts 26:22)!
